Sophia Scontras
Sophia was born in Portsmouth, NH, in 1992, and grew up in southern Maine. She is now completing her undergraduate work at the University of Maine, Orono for her Bachelors of Studio Art and a minor in Art History. She is expected to graduate in August of 2015.
After completing an internship with established New England printmaker, Don Gorvett at Piscataqua Fine Arts, Sophia is now working with Mary Harding at the George Marshall Store Gallery. She hopes to continue working in galleries while maintaining her artistic practices at home.
Artists statement
"My work is often concerned with the mark in its relation to the subject, rather than looking for a literal translation. I believe that the most important aspect of a work is in its process and how material is laid down, which I think lends itself particularly well to the figure. My work aims to explore the relationship between the figure and energy, and how I can capture that energy accurately and honestly in new, interesting ways."
